On Sunday March 20th, we commemorated the 100th anniversary of a terrible tragedy in the town. During a World War I air raid on the town, a bomb was dropped near the church that resulted in the deaths of two adults and seven children on the way to Sunday School. During the service, attended by the Mayor of Ramsgate, Trevor Shonk, there was a period of silence. During this time seven children who were about the same age as those killed, carried some flowers and a banner to the front of the church, before reading out the names and ages of those who died. We are very grateful to the staff and students of Year 6 at Newlands School for producing the banner used in the service and scrapbooks detailing the events of 1916. Many people enjoyed looking at these after the service. |
