David and Goliath (1 Samuel 17)

David and Goliath is one of the best known stories in the Bible. It is often used as a symbol of a small force winning out over a more powerful and mighty force. The plucky underdog winning the day.

Yet the story has much deeper lessons about faith and insight, which are even more important for us to grasp today.

David is Chosen (1 Samuel 16:1-13)

This story introduces David to us for the first time. Yet, the focus is on Samuel. By this time he is an old prophet who as a child saw the failure of the High Priest, Eli, and his family and now as an old man the rejection by God of King Saul, the first king of Israel, whom Samuel had anointed.

Now God has one final mission for Samuel, to anoint a new king. It is a dangerous mission, but as ever Samuel is faithful and obedient. Yet, he still has lessons to learn. He needs to know that God judges our heart attitudes, not our outward appearance.

Righteousness through faith (Romans 3:21-31)

Luther said that this passage is:
"…the chief point and the very central place of the Epistle and the whole Bible."

After spending the first few chapters explain that God's wrath is being revealed (1:18) on everyone because no one will be declared righteous by the works of the law (3:20), Paul says, 'but now...'.

In other words having explained the bad news, this is the heart of the good news that Romans is all about. There is a way of gaining righteousness, but it is from God not us!

God's Words and Sinful People (Romans 3:1-20)

Is the church a club for the righteous or a hospital for sinners?

Many people today associate the church with being judgemental and hypocritical. Yet, the Bible makes clear that we are not better than others, but fellow sinners who have found God's wonderful gift of salvation in Jesus Christ.
