Victory through prayer (Joshua 10:1-15)

Who's side is God on? It's a question we might ask when countries go to war, especially if both claim to be Christian. Yet in many ways it is the wrong question. The question the book of Joshua wants  to ask us is: 'Are you on God's side?'

Here is the video on Joshua mentioned in the talk:

You gotta serve somebody (Joshua 24:1-28)

This is the last in our series in Joshua. At the end of the book God has established Israel in the Promised Land. So Joshua gathers all the people, reminds them of what God has done for them and sets a choice before them: 'Who are you going to serve?' The gods your ancestors used to serve, the gods of the peoples of the land of Canaan or the true God, the God who had given them the victory?

Caleb had been one of twelve sent into Canaan to spy out the land. 10 of the spies had said the land was too hard to conquer, but Caleb and Joshua had spoken up and said that with God's help they could do it. Moses had promised Caleb that he would inherit the land and now 45 years later, Caleb, an old man is still just as courageous as he discovers that God has proved faithful to his promise.

Avoiding a Fall (Joshua 7)

After the amazing victory at Jericho Israel faces a humiliating defeat at the city of Ai. But why? It is because of one man's sin. Achan is the weak link in the chain, because he had taken from Jericho what should have been devoted to God. Israel needs to deal with the sin and Achan is forced to face the consequences.

Why was Achan's sin so bad? How can we avoid a similar fall?

It is not always easy being a Christian. Indeed, sometimes it can be downright scary. We need courage to be able to continue and to serve God. But how can we get that courage?

In this passage, Joshua is told by God to be 'strong and courageous!' Yet, this is not simply a command, it is a command with advice and promises to enable the courage that Joshua needs.
