Samson: Hero in the End (Judges 16:21-31)

Samson is possibly the most famous of the Judges. He is the strong man of Israel, causing great trouble for their oppressors the Philistines.

Yet, he has his weaknesses - especially women. In the end it is one woman, Delilah, who is bribed to betray him. So Samson, the Philistines most wanted man is captured and put on display in their temple to Dagon. Yet, Samson still has faith, and the Philistine victory is turned into disaster as Samson's God proves far greater than theirs.

Snatching tragedy from victory (Judges 11:29-40)

Picture
This is one of the most tragic stories in the Bible. It ends in Jephthah sacrificing his only daughter because of a rash vow he unnecessarily makes to God before he goes and defeats the Ammonites.

It forms part of the tragic downward spiral of Israel as it keeps forgetting the God who rescued them from Egypt and gave them the Promised land and instead keep turning to other gods.

As this was only a short children's talk there is no recorded sermon. However, here are the main points:

What can we learn from the story:
  • Wisdom: Be careful what you promise
  • Faith: Know what God is really like
    • God is not like other gods
    • God is compassionate - 10:15
    • God is gracious - John 3:16

God's Surprising Answer to Prayer (Judges 6-7)

The story of Gideon is one of the best known Old Testament stories. It is quite an involved story, full of surprises, but in many ways it all stems from Israel's 'Cry for help' as they are constantly raided by neighbouring nations.

Divine Sovereignty and Human Comedy: Ehud (Judges 3:12-30)

The book of judges tells of the life of Israel at a time which was often violent and bloody. Despite God's amazing rescue of them from Egypt and gift to them of the promised land they soon forgot about him and followed other gods.

God couldn't let this go and so allowed neighbouring nations and people to oppress them. Yet, when Israel cried out to God for help he raised up Judges or deliverers like Ehud who he then used to rescue Israel from their oppressors.
