The disciples just weren't getting it. Jesus was telling them he was going to die, they were jockeying for positions of glory.

So, Jesus calls them together and tells them how different the Kingdom of God is to be from how everyone else lives...

Jesus speaks more about heaven and hell than anyone else in the Bible. But should we believe in heaven and hell in the 2st century? And why does Jesus teach his disciples about it here? How should belief in heaven and hell effect how we live our lives as Christians today?

Jesus: Reject or welcome? (Mark 9:30-37)

Who do we welcome and who do we reject?

In this passage Jesus first of all tells his disciples that he is going to be rejected / betrayed / handed over and is going to be killed. He then tells them that they need to welcome even children!

Why is welcoming insignificant people so important and what has it to do with the cross?

"Why couldn't we do it?" the disciples ask. They had been unable to help a young boy, but Jesus did. Why?

Why is it sometimes God seems to help us in amazing ways, but other times he doesn't? In what way are we to pray?

This passage gives us some helpful insights.

Easter 2018

Easter is the most important festival in the Christian year as we focus on the heart of our faith, the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

These two sermons were recorded during this weekend. The first focuses on communion and how it helps us to keep our focus on the cross, but also helps us remember that it is the cross and resurrection which gives birth to the church.

The second sermon reflects on an argument Jesus had with some people who didn't believe in a bodily life beyond death and sees how it is relevant to discussions with people today who claim science means we can dismiss faith.

We have already seen Jesus do some really awesome miracles that no-one else does. Now his popularity is at its height, but despite the numbers flocking to see him, Jesus demonstrates that he is able to provide for their needs in an amazing way.

In this section of Mark, we are being shown Jesus's power and authority at its most amazing. In this story he even raises a girl from the dead.

But, why does he want to keep this a secret? Why is this amazing miracle so low key?

Having demonstrated his power over nature by calming a storm on the lake, Jesus and his disciples arrive on the other side in a non-Jewish region. They are suddenly approached by a man who is in a terrible state, possessed by a whole legion of unclean spirits.

Yet in a further demonstration of his power and authority, Jesus just tells the unclean spirits to go and they dramatically leave the man and enter a herd of pigs.

No-one else has this power over nature (Mark 4:35-41)

In this dramatic story, we find Jesus asleep. A storm is raging the disciples, many of whom are seasoned fishermen are terrified they are about to drown, yet Jesus is snoozing on a cushion in the back of the boat.

That in itself is amazing, but what happens when they wake Jesus is astounding. The disciples are about to discover there's no-one like Jesus.
