This story introduces David to us for the first time. Yet, the focus is on Samuel. By this time he is an old prophet who as a child saw the failure of the High Priest, Eli, and his family and now as an old man the rejection by God of King Saul, the first king of Israel, whom Samuel had anointed. Now God has one final mission for Samuel, to anoint a new king. It is a dangerous mission, but as ever Samuel is faithful and obedient. Yet, he still has lessons to learn. He needs to know that God judges our heart attitudes, not our outward appearance. |
