Luther said that this passage is: "…the chief point and the very central place of the Epistle and the whole Bible." After spending the first few chapters explain that God's wrath is being revealed (1:18) on everyone because no one will be declared righteous by the works of the law (3:20), Paul says, 'but now...'. In other words having explained the bad news, this is the heart of the good news that Romans is all about. There is a way of gaining righteousness, but it is from God not us! |
